Is My Lawn Dead or Dormant? | Lawn Care Derbyshire

Dead or dormant lawn? The East Midlands Lawn Care Company

Is Your Lawn Dead or Just Dormant? How to Tell the Difference

After prolonged hot, dry weather, your lawn can quickly change from green and healthy to brown, dry and seemingly lifeless. But before assuming your grass is dead and needs replacing, there’s an important question to ask:

Is your lawn actually dead, or has it simply gone dormant?

At The East Midlands Lawn Care Company, we regularly see lawns across Derbyshire and the East Midlands that look far worse than they really are. Grass has a natural defence mechanism that can help it survive periods of drought and heat.

Why does grass turn brown during hot weather?

When water becomes scarce, many lawn grasses will enter dormancy. Growth slows dramatically and the visible grass leaf can lose its green colour as the plant conserves resources.

The result can be a brown lawn that looks dead — despite the grass plant still being alive.

Once cooler temperatures and consistent rainfall return, a dormant lawn can begin recovering naturally.

The simple test: is your grass still alive?

There’s a quick test you can carry out yourself.

Take hold of a small section of brown grass and give it a gentle tug.

If the grass remains firmly rooted in the soil, that's a good indication that the plant may simply be dormant and capable of recovering.

If it pulls away very easily with little resistance, particularly across larger patches, the grass may have died and some repair work could be required.

Don't renovate a lawn that doesn't need renovating

This is why diagnosing the problem properly matters.

A struggling lawn doesn't automatically need to be ripped up and replaced. Depending on its condition, recovery could involve anything from allowing rainfall to naturally revive it through to aeration, scarification, overseeding, lawn treatments or a full lawn renovation.

Our approach is to assess why a lawn is struggling before recommending what should be done to it.
